Installation of State of FL Historic Marker on right of way in front of the Museum regarding its past use as jail for 100 years. Text: The Old Nassau County Jail has occupied several buildings on this site from 1878 through 1978. The jail traces its provenance to Territorial Florida and the 1824 charter of Nassau County, with Fernandina as the county seat. The deed for the property, dated May 23rd, 1871, was signed by David Yulee and attested to by Samuel Swann. The first jailhouse built on this site in 1878 was a single-story, wood frame structure. This was replaced in 1935 with a two-story, Masonry Vernacular construction with Modernistic influences, featuring improved jail cells, plumbing and cots. In 1954 the jail was further updated with an addition that nearly doubled its size to include a desk clerk’s office, guest rooms, lockers and showers. Four cells and two day-rooms for inmates were located on the first floor, and six cells occupied the second level. There were separate areas for men and women, and during segregation for white and black inmates. In 1978 the new Nassau County Jail opened in Yulee, and the following year, Nassau County deeded the building to an earlier incarnation of the Amelia Island Museum of History. Extensive renovations were performed on the facility in 2003 and 2007, which showcases our area's rich history.
