The City of Fernandina Beach is requesting final approval for signage necessary to implement the paid parking program within the historic downtown district. The proposed signs measure 12" x 18" and will be mounted on 2" x 2" square tubular metal poles. These poles are currently in use throughout the district for existing parking and wayfinding signage. The new parking signs will utilize the same color palette as the existing signage, with the addition of a black border to visually echo the framed design of current wayfinding signs. It is estimated that over 200 signs will be required to effectively enforce the paid parking program within the designated area—bounded by Ash Street to Alachua Street, Front Street to 8th Street, and including Marina Lots A and B. This area encompasses approximately 750 parking spaces. Wherever feasible, existing poles will be reused. When new poles are necessary, signs will be installed in landscaped areas rather than sidewalks to minimize visual and physical disruption. Sign heights will vary to enhance accessibility, particularly for mobile scanning. ADA-designated spaces are excluded from the paid parking program. Sign placement will be carefully planned to avoid obstructing or impacting historic buildings, landmarks, and key sightlines. The signage has been designed to complement the character and aesthetics of the historic downtown. The paid parking program is intended to improve access, increase turnover, and generate funding for district improvements—all of which support the vitality of downtown businesses.
